The longest running educational effort at Ames is the Forestry Camp for rising seniors in the School of Natural Resources at the University of Tennessee. These students spend two weeks at Ames in an intense Silviculture Course where they are able to see academic and scientific principles presented on the chalkboard and demonstrated in the forest.
With a wide array of soils, landforms, and habitats, combined with a myriad of wildlife and forested systems, Ames provides a natural laboratory for research and education where almost any natural resource issue can be addressed. Here, the students are on the way to class. Principles are taught in the classroom. The Forest becomes the teacher as data are gathered to test the principles against what is “really out there.” Each team analyzes and interprets their data. The result is presented to the class. Students get hands-on in every aspect of Silviculture.
